Missing Heirs Funds Held on Deposit with the Merced County Treasurer
Pursuant to Probate Code Section 7643 and Code of Civil Procedures Section 1444:
After the deceased persons debts are paid pursuant to Section 7662 [Probate], and if no beneficiaries are located, the remaining estate is held by the county for a period of one year. After one year, the county then transfers the missing heirs funds to the State Controller along with its semi-annual Estates of Deceased Persons Report of Cash and Personal Property Absent Heirs or Claimants Report. These funds revert to the State if after five years they remain unclaimed.
